Recently, many friends have shared their concerns with me about whether AI writing will eventually replace human authors. They pointed out that some novel platforms have already started signing contracts with AI authors, which has sparked worries among writers and readers alike.
Out of curiosity, I obtained an AI author account named "Jiang Yue Reads". A quick search led me to several so-called "works" under this name—you can look them up yourself to get a sense of the writing quality.
AI-generated novels often suffer from a monotonous writing style, favoring a straightforward, rigid structure that lacks variation. These stories tend to over-explain every detail, as if afraid the reader might not understand the narrative. For instance, a character might be described as "calm, rational, intelligent, and capable", yet such direct statements make the character feel overly one-dimensional, restricting the reader’s imagination.
Another common flaw is excessively long-winded dialogue. AI-generated stories often stretch out simple exchanges into unnecessarily lengthy conversations, dragging a few lines of dialogue into multiple chapters. Of course, not every human writer excels at storytelling, but at the very least, AI ensures grammatical correctness—though that alone does not make for engaging writing.
Beyond linguistic shortcomings, AI-generated content often feels hollow. Take one example from a screenshot I came across: the story revolves around a female protagonist with a hidden past—her mother disappeared at birth. Instead of delving into the emotional complexity of this mystery, the AI spends hundreds of words describing trivial aspects of her daily routine—choosing outfits, working hard, meeting people, displaying different expressions, and staying late at the office. While these details add volume, they do little to develop the character’s inner world or advance the plot in a meaningful way.
I firmly believe that this level of storytelling is more of a burden than a pleasure for readers.
While I don’t place high moral expectations on corporate decision-making, I do have confidence in the technological capabilities of AI. However, AI-authored contracts often serve as a marketing strategy rather than a genuine literary movement—a means to attract investment, boost stock price expectations, and generate profits through various channels. The quality of the work itself? That seems to be the least of their concerns.
AI writing will not replace human authors, but it will reshape the industry. Just as photography didn’t eliminate painting and calculators didn’t replace mathematicians, AI is more likely to become a tool that assists rather than replaces creators.
